Lairg village on the shores of Loch Shin in the heart of Sutherland is the ideal base from which to tour the Far Northern Highlands. Watch the salmon leap at the Falls of Shin only 5 miles away. Croick Church at Glencalvie tells its own story of the Highland Clearances. Travel East and visit Dunrobin Castle at Golspie, Clynelish Distillery at Brora, and further up the coast the Castle of Mey, home of the Queen Mother, these can all be seen on the way North to John o’Groats from where you may even wish to take a day trip to Orkney! To the West is the untamed wilderness of Sutherland with magnificent scenery and inlets and white sandy beaches to explore. A short boat trip takes you to Handa Island near Scourie where there is a bird sanctuary. Smoo Cave is North West at Durness where again a short boat trip will take you to Cape Wrath. Sutherland enjoys some of Scotland’s finest wild brown trout and salmon fishing among other popular pursuits including shooting and stalking, boating and sailing, golf on many courses including Royal Dornoch which is an easy 25 minute drive away. Bird watching and hill walking are among other very popular pursuits. There are no shortage of forest walks and nature trails. An increasing number of motorcyclists have discovered the pleasure of touring on our long roads through magnificent scenery. The list is endless. Sutherland has something for everyone.
